Okinawan cuisine uses pork extensively. Popular dishes such as rafute (braised pork belly), Okinawa soba with soki (pork ribs), and champuru stir-fries often contain pork or pork-based broth. Look for words like "pork," "soki," or "rafute" on menus. We recommend checking ingredients before ordering.
Awamori is Okinawa's traditional distilled spirit. On drink menus, "awamori," "beer" (ビール), "chuhai" (チューハイ), and "cocktail" (カクテル) indicate alcoholic drinks. Ask for "non-alcoholic" (ノンアルコール) or "no alcohol" (アルコールなし) if needed. Soft drinks (water, juice, and tea) do not contain alcohol.
Apps like "HalalNavi" and websites like "Halal Media Japan" can help you find halal-friendly restaurants in Japan. For prayer times, apps like "Muslim Pro" are useful. In Okinawa, the qibla direction faces approximately northwest.
As of this writing, there are no confirmed mosques on Okinawa's main island. Some hotels and shopping malls may offer prayer rooms — we recommend contacting your accommodation in advance. Please also check the latest information from the Okinawa Prefectural Tourism Promotion Division or OCVB (Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau).
