Currency, tipping, etiquette, and emergency contacts — all in one place
Only Japanese Yen (JPY) is accepted. Foreign currencies cannot be used directly.
Visa and Mastercard are accepted at major tourist spots and restaurants. Cash-only is common at smaller or rural establishments.
IC cards (Suica etc.) work at convenience stores in Naha and some shops. Also usable on the Yui Rail monorail.
ATMs: 7-Eleven, Japan Post Bank, and post offices accept international cash cards (VISA/Plus, Mastercard/Cirrus).
Japan has no tipping culture. Service charges are always included in the price.
Offering a tip may be refused. If you wish to show appreciation, placing money in an envelope (pochibukuro) may be accepted.
Behave quietly at shrines and sacred utaki sites, and respect no-photography signs.
Smoking is prohibited at most beaches. Only smoke in designated smoking areas.
Please avoid loud voices or noise in public. Especially in residential areas and late at night.
Always take your trash with you. Littering on beaches and in nature is strictly prohibited.
Check the rules before using selfie sticks or drones that may disturb other visitors.
