Sustainable Tourism — Protect Okinawa's Nature

Okinawa's world-class natural environment can be preserved through our collective choices.

Coral Reef Status and Conservation Efforts

Okinawa's seas are home to Japan's largest coral reef systems, supporting one of the world's most diverse marine ecosystems. However, coral reefs are facing serious threats from rising sea temperatures caused by global warming and the proliferation of crown-of-thorns starfish. According to environmental data, approximately 70% of domestic coral reefs have suffered some form of damage.

Coral bleaching occurs when water temperatures rise by just 1–2°C, causing corals to expel their symbiotic algae and turn white. Bleached corals have weakened immune systems and may die if they cannot recover. As climate change progresses, bleaching events are becoming more frequent and widespread.

In Okinawa, many conservation organizations and government agencies are working to restore and protect coral reefs. Activities include artificial coral transplantation by divers, beach cleanup volunteering, and the promotion of reef-safe sunscreen. These community-wide efforts are growing, and travelers can make a difference by learning about and supporting these initiatives.

Coral Reef Protection: Public-sector initiatives such as the Okinawa Coral Reef Conservation Promotion Project (Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation Bureau) are advancing.
