One of the World Heritage Sites "Gusuku and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu" in Uruma City, this castle flourished as the residence of the Amawari in the 13th and 14th centuries. The beautiful curved stone walls and the panoramic view of the east coast are attractive. The historical and cultural facility "Amawari Park" is also located here.
Katsuren Castle Ruins is one of the oldest gusuku (Ryukyu castle) in Okinawa, located at the base of the Katsuren Peninsula in Uruma City. It was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site "Gusuku and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu" in 2000.
The castle is built on a hillside at an elevation of 60 to 100 meters above sea level, and from the first circle, a 360-degree view of Nakagusuku Bay, Kanamu Bay, and the Katsuren Peninsula can be seen. The silhouette of the curving stone walls is distinctive, and it is also a popular spot for silhouette photographs with the sunset in the background.
At the entrance to the castle ruins, there is a historical and cultural facility "Amari Park," which opened in 2022, where visitors can enjoy a video exhibition introducing the life of Amawari, a permanent exhibition displaying excavated artifacts, and a theater where visitors can experience the history of Katsuren. It is about an hour's drive from Naha and close to the entrance of the underwater road, so it is recommended to visit in combination with a drive along the East Coast.
Opening hours and admission fees are subject to change. Please check the official website for the latest information.
