The 1.6-kilometer-long main street runs through the center of Naha City. It is a standard shopping and dining spot as a starting point for sightseeing in Okinawa, and is also called "Miracle Mile," a symbol of postwar reconstruction. On Sundays, it is a pedestrian paradise.
Kokusai-dori is a 1.6 km long main street that runs east to west through the center of Naha City. Connecting the north exit intersection of the Okinawa Prefectural Government Building to the Asato three-way intersection, it is known as the "Miracle Mile" because of its phenomenal speed of reconstruction from the scorched earth after World War II, and has become a symbolic downtown area in postwar Okinawa.
Along the street are about 600 restaurants offering Okinawan gourmet foods such as Okinawa soba, taco rice, sea grapes, and steaks, as well as souvenir stores selling Bingata, Ryukyu glass, shisa, awamori, and chinsuko, etc. The street is crowded with many tourists throughout the day.
The Daiichi Makishi Public Market, which symbolizes Okinawa's food culture, is located on "Ichiba Hondori" and "Heiwa Dori," one alley off Kokusai Dori, and offers a lively atmosphere with colorful tropical fish, papaya, bitter melon, island tofu, and other tropical foods.
Every Sunday from 12:00 to 18:00 (cancelled in case of rain), a 1.3 km section of the market becomes a pedestrian paradise called "Transit Mile," where street performances and the International Street Marche are held. Accessible from either Okinawa Urban Monorail (Yui Rail) "Kencho-mae", "Miebashi", or "Makishi" stations.
