Itoman Harley

It is a traditional event held every year on the fourth day of the fifth lunar month (yuccanuhi) at Itoman Fishing Port to pray for a bountiful catch and safety at sea. It is a heroic festival in which rowers powerfully race a reel dragon boat, and was designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Itoman City in 2012. The festival is also known as a poetic tradition that heralds the end of the rainy season in Okinawa, and is crowded with both local residents and tourists.

What is Itoman Harley?

Itoman Harley is a traditional ritual to pray for a good catch and safety at sea, held every year on the fourth day of the fifth lunar month (Yukkanuhi) at Itoman fishing port Naka district. 2026 will be held on Thursday, June 18.

History & Culture

The festival is said to have continued since around the 15th century and symbolizes Itoman's unique fishing town culture. In 2012, it was designated as an Intangible folk cultural asset by Itoman City.

  • 9:00am-: Opening Ceremony
  • A.M.-P.M.: Various rowing events such as Kunnukasae (traditional rowing with oars facing the opposite direction), Agaisubu (round-trip race), Goganbaree (ritual), etc.
  • Wednesday, June 17: Children's Harley Race
