cornerstone of peace

The Cornerstone of Peace is a group of memorial monuments located in the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Park on Mabuni Hill in the southern part of the main island of Okinawa. The park area was one of the last battlegrounds of the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, and is known as the place where many residents and soldiers lost their lives.

At the Cornerstone of Peace, black granite screen-shaped monuments are lined up facing the sea, providing a quiet space to pray for the victims. The inscriptions are organized by region and unit, and visitors can often be seen holding hands as they search for the names.

In the surrounding area, the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum, where visitors can learn about the history of the Battle of Okinawa and study peace, as well as cenotaphs and memorials for each prefecture, are scattered throughout the park, making the entire park a place where memories of the war are passed on to future generations. The park offers a view of the Pacific Ocean and is visited by many people for its peaceful scenery and as a place to think deeply about peace.
