A long and narrow island with a circumference of about 8 km, it is located 5 km off the coast of Nanjo City in the southern part of Okinawa's main island. It is a "God's Island" where Amamikyo, the founder of the Ryukyu Kingdom, is said to have descended, and Shinto rituals have been passed down from generation to generation as the highest sacred place since the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It takes about 25 minutes by ferry from Ajama Port. Cycling around the island is a popular way to get around.

Kudaka Island is an elongated island with a circumference of about 8 km, located 5 km off the coast of Nanjo City in the southern part of Okinawa's main island. It is known as the highest sacred place in the Ryukyu Islands, where Amamikyo, the ancestor god of the creation of Ryukyu, is said to have descended from the heavens and started the creation of the country.

History of "God's Island

In the days of the Kingdom of Ryukyu, the king himself made a pilgrimage to Kutaka Island as part of a state ritual called "Agari-uma-i". Even today, the island has a strong culture of Shinto rituals and prayers, and the islanders continue to carefully preserve these traditions.

Getting Around the Island

Renting a bicycle is a convenient way to visit sacred sites away from the villages. Bicycles can be rented at a store near the port, and can be used to visit the main spots on the island in half a day to a full day. Electric bicycles and guided walking tours are also available.

  • Cape Cabelle: The northernmost sacred site on the island where Amamikyo is said to have descended.
  • Huboh Utaki: One of the most sacred sites in Okinawa, off-limits (only worshiped from the outside)

  • There are areas inside the Utaki (sacred sites) that are off-limits, so worship quietly from outside.
  • Do not take stones, sand, plants, etc. home with you.
  • Greet islanders when you pass by them.
  • Do not swim at beaches where swimming is prohibited (e.g. Ishiki Beach).
  • Follow the directions at some areas where photography is not allowed.
