This stone-paved road was built in the 16th century as part of the "Shinju Road," the main road leading from Shuri to Naha Port. The 238-meter section of the road is a mosaic of Ryukyu limestone paving stones, which have become smooth and shiny after hundreds of years of traffic. It is a designated prefectural historic site and a popular walking course about a 5-minute walk from Shuri Castle.
It is a part of the "Pearl Road" built in the 16th century during the reign of King Shojin, and was constructed as a military road leading from Shuri Castle to Naha Port and the southern part of the main island of Okinawa. The original road was about 10 km long, but most of it was lost during the Battle of Okinawa, and today a 238-meter section is preserved as a Prefectural Historic Site.
The 20 to 30 cm Ryukyu limestone rocks laid out on the hillside have been polished smooth by traffic over the years, giving them a unique texture. Along the slope, old red-tiled houses and stone walls remain, and the stone pavement, which strongly conveys the atmosphere of the Ryukyu Kingdom, is dotted with historic sites such as "Kinjo Muraya (rest area)" and "Kinjo Ohigawa (spring)".
In the middle of the stone-paved path, there is a 200-year-old "Oakagi" tree, which is cherished by the local people as a sacred Utaki. Within walking distance, there are many cultural assets that symbolize Ryukyu culture, such as the World Heritage Site of Shurijo Castle, Tamaryo Shrine, and Shikinaen Garden, which are recommended to visit together.
It is about a 15-minute walk from Shuri Station on the Yui Rail and about a 5-minute walk from Shurijo Park. Please visit with comfortable walking shoes due to the hilly terrain.
