Cultural Background

Awamori is believed to have originated from distillation techniques brought from Southeast Asia around the 15th century. It became an important tribute to the Ryukyuan royal court and continued production under Satsuma rule. Today, 46 distilleries in Okinawa produce awamori under Geographical Indication (GI) protection. (Source: Okinawa Awamori Distillers Association)
